Please Be Mindful of Halloween Costume Choices

Message from the Interfraternity Council and Inter-Sorority Association

Fraternity and Sorority members,

As Halloween approaches, we want to take a moment to remind you of the importance of choosing costumes that respect the diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences of our university community. Halloween is a time for fun and creativity, but it's also an opportunity for us to demonstrate our commitment to inclusivity and respect for all.

PSA: Be Mindful of Your Costume Choices

We encourage all fraternity and sorority life members to be mindful of the impact their Halloween costumes may have on others. What might seem like harmless fun to one person could be offensive or hurtful to another. Our university is a place where diversity is celebrated, and it's crucial that our Halloween celebrations reflect this spirit of inclusivity.

Why It Matters:

Respect for All: Our campus is a rich tapestry of cultures, beliefs, and identities. Wearing costumes that perpetuate stereotypes, mock cultural or religious traditions, or are otherwise offensive can hurt and marginalized members of our community.

Inclusivity: Halloween is an opportunity to come together and have a great time as a community. Choosing respectful costumes helps ensure that everyone feels welcome and valued.

Educational Growth: By making thoughtful costume choices, we can learn more about the diverse experiences of others and foster a culture of empathy and understanding.

Avoid Cultural Appropriation: Steer clear of costumes that borrow elements from cultures or traditions that are not your own, especially if they are sacred or significant.

No Stereotypes: Do not choose costumes that perpetuate stereotypes or make fun of a particular group or identity.

Think Twice: Before finalizing your costume, consider how it might be received by others. If in doubt, choose an alternative outfit.

Celebrate Diversity: Embrace the opportunity to celebrate the richness of our campus by choosing costumes that reflect different cultures and backgrounds in a respectful and positive way.

Let's make this Halloween a time for fun, creativity, and most importantly, respect. We believe in your ability to make thoughtful costume choices that uphold our values of inclusivity and community. Together, we can create a Halloween celebration that makes everyone feel welcome and valued.

Thank you for your understanding and commitment to a respectful Halloween season.

Please reach out with any questions, comments, and concerns.

Thank you,
