Fraternity & Sorority Update - 9/20/24

 

September Fraternal Excellence Initiative Report - REQUIRED of ALL Fraternity and Sorority Members

The monthly Fraternal Excellence Initiative Report will be sent out on Monday to all current members.  All active members (not new members) are required to submit this monthly questionnaire, which should take no more than 5 minutes maximum to complete. Percentages of completion, along with the names of who completed the form, will be sent out by Gabby Spadavecchia, FEI Coordinator, to presidents within a week of the deadline. This form will be due by midnight on Tuesday, October 1.

Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity is hosting an outdoor concert on Saturday (tomorrow) with five live bands. Tickets can be purchased on Cardinal Link for $5. 


National Hazing Prevention Week starts Monday

National Hazing Prevention Week, sponsored by the Interfraternity Council and Inter-Sorority Association begins on Monday, September 23 with a Case Study Competiton. Pre-registration is required.

Tuesday, September 24 at 7 p.m. on the ACC Amite Plaza is the Candlelight Vigil Against Violence in memory of Walter Dean Jennings III, a student who died of hazing at SUNY Plattsburgh in 2003.

Wednesday, September 25 will be a series of programs by nationally recognized speaker Michael Ayalon. The schedule is as follows: 

11 a.m. in ACC Meeting Room #1 - A program for Membership and Recruitment Officers

1 p.m. in ACC Meeting Room #1 - A program about drug and alcohol abuse. This program is open to all members and will count as a risk management/harm reduction educational program requirement.

4:30 p.m. in ACC Meeting Room #1 - A program for New Member Educators

8 p.m.  in the ACC Ballrooms -
Unity Without Harm: Hazing Prevention for a Safer Brotherhood & Sisterhood This program will count as a risk management/harm reduction program.

Delve into the historical roots of hazing to understand its origins and persisting factors and explore the deep-seated reasons behind hazing and its extensive ramifications, including legal, psychological, and communal impacts. A significant focus will be on identifying hazing activities and cultivating proactive bystander intervention strategies. You  will learn to recognize the early signs of hazing and effectively intervene to prevent harmful scenarios from unfolding. Moreover, the program encourages the creation of meaningful and engaging alternatives to hazing that promote unity, skill-building, and healthy interactions among members, thereby achieving the cherished goals of brotherhood and sisterhood without the cost of individual well-being and group integrity.

Thursday, September 26 at 5:30 p.m. in the ACC Ballrooms is Hazing Prevention Trivia.

Title IX Training Session for Chapter Leaders - Session Two

Federal law requires the leadership (all officers and chairpersons) of all student organizations to be trained in Title IX annually. The next session will be held on Friday, October 27 from 12:30 - 2 p.m. in the ACC Alumni Conference Room.


Volunteers Needed Next Weekend for the ISA Pancake Breakfast

The Inter-Sorority Association is hosting their annual Family Weekend/Homecoming Breakfast on Saturday, September 28 in the ACC Flynt Commons. Just shy of 200 people have registered so far. Volunteers are needed for set up, clean up, cooking and event management. Sign up on Cardinal Link! Your help is appreciated.
 

Pillars of Excellence Recognition

Nominate a fraternity/sorority organization or member for a Pillar of Excellence Recognition. There are four areas that you can nominate someone in: Friendship, Scholarship, Leadership and Service. We will announce nominees on Fraternity & Sorority Life and Center for Student Involvement social media and recap weekly winners in each Fraternity & Sorority Update. To nominate a group or individual, simply send an email to FSlife@plattsburgh.edu explaining why you are nominating the group/individual, which pillar of excellence you are nominating them for (e.g. friendship, scholarship, etc.) and attach a photo if you have one.

 

Interfraternity Council & Inter-Sorority Association Applications Due Next Wednesday

Applications to serve on the 2025 IFC and ISA Executive Boards and Committees can be found HERE and are due by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25. More details can be found in the application. Contact Sophia Sabatini or Antonio Romano for more information.

 

Event Reservation Process - IF YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR RESERVING EVENTS, READ THIS.

Please be reminded that ALL events, whether on or off-campus, must be registered. All non-alcohol events must be registered through Cardinal Link and if you need a room on campus, you must also request one on the EMS system. You are not able to request an event 3 days or less before the date. If you receive an email asking you for more information and you do not respond or respond three days or less before the event, the event cannot be held. Only those listed as officers in Cardinal Link are able to make event reservations. Directions for events registration can be found HERE.
